On launch day for the Nintendo Wii I picked up a copy of Red Steel. The newest game from Ubisoft for the Wii.
Despite some bad reviews on Gamespot and other sites, this is a pretty good game.
The story starts out as you, Scott, are on a romantic date with your girlfriend and are about to meet her father. As you proceed to him some members of the Yakuza (think japanese gangsters) start shooting everybody. They kidnapp your girlfriend and injure her father. You must then navigate through the level helping him. There, you learn the basics of the gun and sword.
The rest of the story is pretty much you trying to rescue your girlfriend and not letting the Yakuza take this sword from you called the "Katana Giri".
The gameplay is simple. You proceed through the level shooting everyone you see. When someone with a sword comes out, then you must take out your sword and fight him. The gunplay is the best part of the game. Aiming is easy thanks to the Wiimote. There are also a variety of guns and also grenades. The swordplay isnt that intersting. In fact, If this game would have been a straight FPS, it would be much better. You basically make movement with your hands to swing. You block with the nunchuck and dodge with the control stick. A cool thing is you can
choose to kill the enemy if you defeat them or spare them.
The graphics in this game....well.....suck...
They are not as bad as to not get the game, but they could use some improvement.
The game is pretty long and took me a while to beat. One level was 4 hours long! After you beat the game there isnt really anything else to do except multiplayer. You can replay the levels too bu it wont override your score or anything.
Multiplayer is split-screen 4-player. It has deathmatch, team deathmatch and killer. I havent tried out killer.
The sound from the game is pretty good. Some of it also comes from the remote which is alright I guess. It isnt the best.
In conclusion, Red Steel is a good game that is very easy to learn and is very fun. If you like FPS games then you should at least give this game a rent. It could have been better, much better.
FINAL GRADE:
Gameplay:8/10
Graphics:5/10
Replay Value:6/10
Multiplayer:8/10
Tilt:8.5/10
Sound:7/10
Value/8.5/10
Overall Grade:7.9/10 B-
